Amy Pascal, Jamie Foxx and Sony Pictures Television are teaming up to produce a TV crime drama adaptation of Thomas Mullen’s upcoming crime novel “Darktown”.
Set in Atlanta in 1948, the story centers on the city’s first black police officers – whose hire in the department is met with vitriol from their white counterparts and distrust from within their own African American community.
The officers were treated as second class – only allowed to patrol in black neighborhoods, not allowed to arrest white suspects, and forced to operate out of the basement of a gym. The story involves a black woman who turns up fatally beaten after last seen in a car driven by a white man.
Pascal and Foxx will executive produce the project.
