Park Chan Wook Goes Western In Rattlecreek

Celebrated South Korean helmer Park Chan-wook (“Oldboy,” “Stoker,” “The Handmaiden”), rising writer/director S. Craig Zahler (“Bone Tomahawk,” “Brawl in Cell Block 99”) and Amazon Studios are all teaming up for the ultraviolent western thriller “The Brigands of Rattlecreek”.

Park was in talks to direct the project seven years ago, but the film (then called “The Brigands of Rattleborge”) stalled and has been stuck in development hell ever since until Amazon Studios very recently picked it up and renamed it.

Zahler’s script topped the 2006 Black List and follows a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize the occupants of a small town.

Bradley Fischer (“Shutter Island”) will produce the film with Matthew McConaughey being courted for the doctor role and another A-lister is being sought for the sheriff, but no casting deals are yet in place.

Park is coming off major critical acclaim for his AMC mini-series based on John le Carre’s “The Little Drummer Girl” which aired late last year.
