“Pacific Rim: Maelstrom” Australian Set Photos

The first bit of exterior shooting on the science-fiction action sequel “Pacific Rim: Maelstrom” took place in Sydney yesterday as parts of Cronulla Beach were transformed to look like a destroyed Santa Monica beach for the feature.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” star John Boyega was on hand to film scenes and the first set photos of him in action can be seen below as well as on The Daily Telegraph website. Boyega stars as the son of the original protagonist Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) and it was just announced that Shyrley Rodriguez and Chinese action film star Zhang Jin will join him in the cast alongside the already attached Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny.

Filming began last month in Queensland after a $20 million grant from the NSW government. Steven S. DeKnight helms the follow-up to the 2013 feature which nabbed $411 million at the box office worldwide. The new film hits cinemas on February 23rd 2018.
