It looks like the Jim Caviezel-led sci-fi epic “Outlander” has been dumped and will now go direct-to-DVD according to Dread Central.
The Weinstein Company held distribution rights to the Howard McCain-directed $47 million epic about an alien bounty hunter seeking a monstrous fugitive who’s crash landed in Norway during Viking times. Caviezel stars in the film alongside Sophia Myles, Ron Perlman and John Hurt.
The studio has been undecided about the film’s fate as no theatrical release date had yet been set. Now, Movies Unlimited have made the film available for pre-order with a November 18th street date.
No official announcement about the DVD has yet been released so it’s not confirmed though. Why the decision was made is unsure as $47 million is a very large write-off for the Weinsteins, though Viking-themed films have never gone well financially – most recently “Pathfinder” which coincidentally starred Karl Urban who was to originally play the lead role in “Outlander”.
