Rumored a few weeks ago, “Bates Motel” and “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” star Olivia Cooke has entered official negotiations for the female lead in Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” at Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow.
An adaptation of the best-selling sci-fi novel by Ernie Cline, the story follows a teenager named Wade Watts who becomes immersed in a virtual reality world known as Oasis which enables users to live out their dream lives. When the game’s creator suddenly dies, Wade enters an elaborate treasure hunt, where the winner will take control of the entire company.
The teenager soon finds himself up against corporate entities who will do anything to take over the company. Cooke would play the teen’s love interest and competitor, a Canadian blogger whose name in the virtual world is Art3mis.
Cooke beat out the likes of Elle Fanning and Lola Kirke following screen tests in Los Angeles and New York with Spielberg who was hoping to find the male and female leads at the same time. The search for a male lead is ongoing.
Zak Penn wrote the script while Spielberg, Donald De Line, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce. The film is set for a December 15th 2017 release date.
