Norton, Kirby Expose Stalinism In “Gareth Jones”

James Norton (“McMafia,” “Grantchester”) and Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown”) are set to play journalists in “Europa, Europa” filmmaker Agnieszka Holland’s politically charged new feature “Gareth Jones” for WestEnd Films.

Set in the early 1930s and based on real events, Norton plays an ambitious Welsh journalist who travels to Moscow to attempt to interview dictator Joseph Stalin.

In Russia, he meets a New York Times reporter (Kirby) who clues Jones in to Russian government oppression and, after a clandestine trip to Ukraine, he writes about it but must then fight for the truth in the face of propaganda, denials and cover-ups.

As he tries to tell the story, he meets a young George Orwell and shares his findings, which in turn influences the author’s classic novel “Animal Farm”. Andrea Serdaru-Barbul penned the script and will produce, and shooting takes place in Poland, Ukraine and Britain from February 26th.
