Without question, the biggest surprise at Thursday afternoon’s San Diego Comic Con panel for Paramount Pictures was the appearance of actor Matthew McConaughey and director Christopher Nolan on the stage to talk up their sci-fi film “Interstellar”.
Both Comic Con virgins, the appearance was kept a surprise and both talked up the film along with premiering a world exclusive trailer for the project which included new scenes such as one showing the spaceship crew touching down on an ice planet.
Nolan says he grew up fascinated by space travel and hopes a film like this will re-inspire the desire for exploration: “It’s been a time of incredible technological change but it’s more about what’s in your pocket. I hope we are on the cusp of a brand new era of exploration and looking outwards more. For me the thrill of trying to make a large-scale sci-fi film about journeying through the stars has to be about the experience for the audience. We’re trying to show the biggest possible images and… to do that you need the biggest possible canvas.”
Of Nolan’s filmmaking style, McConaughey says: “He works by his instincts. We moved fast. I was surprised. It felt like an independent movie. Two, three, five takes, then we move on. His reach exceeds his grasp. It’s by far the most ambitious film Mr Nolan has ever done. You will see why.”
“Interstellar” was the last film as part of Paramount’s presentation which otherwise kept it fairly simple. Dwayne Johnson showed up to plug this week’s release of “Hercules” by offering free preview screenings that night on a first-come, first-serve basis. The “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot dominated the action thanks to several clips and a full panel with Megan Fox, Will Arnett, director Jonathan Liebesman, producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller and creator Kevin Eastman.
Other sneak peeks include the first clip from “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water”, new footage from time-travel thriller “Project Almanac,” and the trailer for “Hot Tub Time Machine 2”
