Those who have been long holding out hope that Disney Pictures would release the theatrical cuts of the original “Star Wars” trilogy to disc (outside of an old non-anamorphic DVD) – today Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shot you down.
Kennedy has officially confirmed to Omny FM (via Screen Rant that the company has no plans on messing with George Lucas’ special edition cuts and intend to leave the movies the way that Lucas wanted them to be seen – the ‘Special Edition’ cuts only:
“I wouldn’t touch those, are you kidding me? [laughs] Those will always remain his.”
Lucas reportedly altered the actual film prints back in the 1990s to create the Special Editions, which would mean the original cuts may not exist anymore and would have to be reassembled carefully. Reports of a potential re-release got fans excited a few months back, but those reports were quickly shot down.
