No Other Spider-Man In “Spider-Man”

With both star Andrew Garfield and director Marc Webb likely departing the series after “The Amazing Spider-Man 3,” the question becomes what Sony Pictures intends to do with its franchise.

Will they reboot again? Will they recast? Or will they try passing the torch to one of the other characters in the comics that have taken on the mantle of Spider-Man such as Miles Morales or Miguel O’Hara?

Garfield himself suggested that final possibility the other day, but now “Amazing Spider-Man” film series producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach have both shot down that speculation in rather definitive fashion. Arad tells The Playlist:

“No. The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today’s world in many ways. But to have multiple ones… I don’t know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man.”

Asked to re-affirm that Spider-Man in the cinematic realm will always be Peter Parker, Arad said “Absolutely.” Tomlach added: “As far as we’re concerned. The guys who take it over after us… Who knows…”

In regards to the spin-offs, the plan is that they are “all going to converge in some way”. Arad says: “Everything we are going to do, all the extensions, Spider-Man will always be there, the idea, even if he’s off-screen, will be there.”
