Alessandro Nivola (“Jurassic Park 3,” “Selma,” “American Hustle”) is in negotiations to star as Dickey Moltisanti in “The Many Saints of Newark,” the upcoming film that serves as a prequel to the critically acclaimed and massively successful HBO TV series “The Sopranos” at New Line Cinema.
In the series continuity, Moltisanti is the deceased uncle of Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) and father of Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli). The character was murdered prior to the show’s timeline and never appears, but is discussed as the key player who helped turn their small gang into a New Jersey crime family which Soprano eventually heads.
The film will be set in the 1960s with the Newark riots serving as a backdrop. Alan Taylor (“Thor: The Dark World”) is directing from a script by series creator Chase and Lawrence Konner. Chase is also producing the pic.
