Nightcrawler, Jubilee Actors Talk “X-Men” Future

With the release of “X-Men: Apocalypse” on Blu-ray and DVD this week, some of the stars have been out and talking up their future with the franchise which, at least for the moment, is unclear.

‘Apocalypse’ introduced a new class of mutants including young versions of Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jubilee (Lana Condor) and Storm (Alexandra Shipp). The end sees them in a lineup in the Danger Room under the watchful training of Mystique and Professor X. Smit-McPhee spoke with Heat Vision this week about where he thinks the series will go:

“They kind of mended some things that didn’t make sense with this timeline, but also they’ve completely left it to us, very obviously. We’re in the Danger Room and the door opens up and we’re all in our comic book accurate costumes. I think it’s kind of teasing the audience to be a little excited for something to come. I only have the same judgment as the audience does. I’m hoping.”

Writer-producer Simon Kinberg has suggested that if another X-Men film happens, it will be set in the 1990s though it’s unclear if it’ll be another film in the ‘First Class’ line-up or the in development Josh Boone-directed “New Mutants”. Either way Smit-McPhee says he hopes to change the character a bit the next time around:

“I obviously displayed him as shy, loving, compassionate, grounded and humble. That would be more abundant in his younger age. If the next movie was to go ahead into the ’90s, like they’ve been doing with the continuity, I feel like I could play him a little tougher, like he’s been through a little more battles… He’s just right in that sweet spot where it’s an homage to how he’s displayed in the comic book and what Alan did. That would really show an arc through not just one movie itself, but all the installments.”

Condor meanwhile spoke with Screen Rant about why many of her scenes were cut and her hopes for Jubilee’s future:

“I don’t know who’s fault it is [that the scenes were cut]. I hope it’s not my fault! If they have another one and I’m lucky enough to be in it, I would love for just like a massive moment where we finally know what her powers are and what they look like. And she unleashes like the Phoenix! Awww, that would be awesome!”
