Nicolas Cage will star in a remake of the 1992 cult classic “The Bad Lieutenant” for Nu Image/Millenium Films reports the trades.
The original Abel Ferrara-directed film followed a depraved, gambling and drug-addicted NYPD cop (Harvey Keitel) who regularly abuses his power. His investigation of the rape of a nun forces him to confront his inner demons.
It remains one of the first and most notable film’s to have garnered an NC-17 rating. The new version will be set in a modern post-9/11 environment and its said the hardcore sex and drug elements will still feature.
Werner Herzog (“Rescue Dawn,” “Grizzly Man”) directs the new version which Billy Finkelstein (“Murder One,” “NYPD Blue,” “Law and Order”) penned. Production will start in late summer.
