Actress Jennifer Lawrence seems to have changed her tune regarding her future with the “X-Men” film franchise. The star has previously hinted that once her three film contract is completed with “X-Men: Apocalypse,” she won’t be slipping into the blue body paint any longer in the role of Mystique. As recently as last May she re-affirmed ‘Apocalypse’ would be her final outing.
Now though, in an interview with Empire, she says: “I am dying to come back. I love these movies, I love being in them. I love ensemble movies because it’s not on anyone’s shoulders.”
The quote comes as executive producer Simon Kinberg has revealed that some familiar X-Men characters are set to pop up in a “New Mutants” spin-off in the works. Kinberg tells IGN:
“Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline ‘X-Men’ movies. As we are going, I would say it’s likely that you will see some familiar faces. [Even so], there’s a very deep bench. There’s a long, long list of names, and I’ll tell you some of the names on that list I don’t even know. That’s how deep it goes.”
“The Fault in Our Stars” helmer Josh Boone and his writing partner are presently working on the script for the New Mutants film which will deal with a team of young X-Men in training. Of the project’s progress, Kinberg says:
“They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it. That’s the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it.”
“X-Men: Apocalypse” opens May 27th.
