Following some brief comments earlier this week about the story, “Star Wars: Episode VIII” helmer Rian Johnson is back with some more quotes about this years ‘Star Wars’ entry via a USA Today feature piece.
One surprise is that Johnson says that despite this being the middle film of the trilogy, the tone will NOT be dark like “The Empire Strikes Back” was:
“I want it to be a blast and to be funny and to be a ride the way The Force Awakens and the original Star Wars movies were.”
Johnson also revealed that the film has had a title since his very first draft of the screenplay, they’ve just chosen not to reveal it yet. It will also offer more insight into the new characters:
“I wanted to know more about each of them, and that doesn’t just mean information or backstory… [I figured] out what’s the most difficult thing each of them could be challenged with now. Let’s throw that at them and dig into what really makes them tick by seeing how they handle that”
There’s also the big question of what’s going on with Luke Skywalker to which he says:
“I’m approaching it with a take that I hope feels honest and real and is going to be interesting to folks and make sense.”
Deep in the midst of post-production, the first trailer is likely to hit in the spring. Johnson refused to be budged on the reveal of the tile, saying on “All in good time.”
