Paramount have scheduled the next entry in the “Friday the 13th” series for a March 13th 2015 release. Just what form that film will take though is unclear.
Paramount owned the rights to the franchise throughout the 1980s and for the first eight films in the series. The rights were then sold to New Line who created the ninth and tenth film along with “Freddy vs. Jason”.
Platinum Dunes rebooted the franchise in 2009 with Warners-owned New Line taking domestic and Paramount taking international rights, but ultimately Warners still owned the franchise. Despite a $91 million worldwide gross, a sequel never really materialised due to complicated rights issues.
Earlier this year, Paramount scored the rights to the franchise free and clear for at least five years as part of a deal which saw them step out of their commitment to Chris Nolan’s “Interstellar” at Warners.
Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the writers behind the 2009 reboot and “Freddy Vs. Jason”, have penned the script for the new one, though there’s no word as yet on the casting or storyline.
