  • "Twilight" Sequel Being Readied?
    By Garth FranklinWednesday, October 15th 2008 4:58am
image Summit Entertainment's CEO Rob Friedman is already readying a Twilight sequel, despite the first film being over a month away from opening reports Deadline Hollywood Daily.

The first inkling that the $37 million film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's novel series was going to be a hit began around the time of the first trailer and clip hitting the Net earlier this year and drew millions of hits in a few short days.

After a massive reception at Comic-Con in July, buzz began to build and build. Last week's trailer drew 3.5 million downloads in less than 48 hours after its premiere. The soundtrack is in the Top 5 Best-Selling Albums on Amazon based on pre-sales alone.

Yet while merchandising sales figures and hit rates indicate more anticipation for this film than pretty much any other film this season, Summit is understandably playing it cautious - and have issued an estimated opening weekend of only about $20 million.

There may be a built-in fanbase with the books and the teenage girl crowd is going nuts for it, but there is a legitimate question of its longevity and appeal outside that demographic - especially amongst males.

Even without that though, the modest budget and likely fast returns means that newcomer Summit Entertainment is unsurprisingly planning on making this its first major franchise - no word as yet on when a sequel will come together.

Finally, its been confirmed that the film has an official runtime of 120 minutes.
