  • "Narnia" Opens Quieter Than Expected
    By Garth FranklinSunday, May 18th 2008 9:36am
image "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" opened on Friday to a $19.3 million first-day haul.

Whilst kid-friendly pics like this often do better on weekends, estimates are that the heavily promoted fantasy feature will take in $53-60 million for the weekend - $20-25 million less than early estimates.

The original "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" opened to a surprisingly strong $23 million first day haul and $65 million opening weekend in 2005, before going on to take in a massive $745 million international gross.

The more expensive 'Caspian' (at a budget said to be at least $200 million) now looks like it will struggle to match the opening weekend of its predecessor, and faces stiffer competition in the face of "Indiana Jones" next week and kiddie rival "Kung Fu Panda" on June 6th.

Whilst it may have been a touch quieter than expected, the film is still thrashing "Speed Racer" which is looking like it'll only take in around $6 million for its second weekend - down nearly 70% from its opening. "Iron Man" is still holding strong in its third weekend and has just passed the $200 million mark.
