Ingmar Bergman's muse, Norwegian actor Liv Ullmann, is to appear in a film produced by her home country for the first time in 38 years reports The Guardian.

Ullmann, 68, will star as a grandmother in the Norwegian film "In a Mirror, In a Riddle" which is based on a novel by Jostein Gaarder.

The story centres on a severely ill 13-year-old girl, with Ullmann playing her grandmother. Ullmann's most recent screen appearance was in Bergman's 2003 swansong Saraband.

The film is being directed by Danish film-maker Jesper Nielsen ("Sophie's World"). Shooting begins in Oslo in November.
