  • The Best New Shows Of Fall 2007
    By Garth FranklinMonday September 17th 2007 12:20am
image The new Fall TV season is looming and small screen critics and pundits have made their recommendations as to which of the two dozen or so shows premiering this Fall are worth catching.

Most interesting is that many agree that this is the weakest line-up of pilots in years, only the unique looking "Pushing Daisies" has garnered any kind of significant buzz, whilst various high profile entries like "Eli Stone" and "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" have been pushed back to mid-season and major re-tooling.

Every year as well, almost seventy key TV critics weigh in with their opinions to BroadcastingCable.com with a poll on their favourite pilot. The aforementioned 'Daisies' easily topped the list with 63% of the vote, followed by The CW's "Reaper" and ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money" a distant second and third with 15% and 12% respectively. The new look "Bionic Woman" and the New Orleans-set "K-Ville" tied for fourth.

Funnily enough "K-Ville" also scored a fourth place and 13% score as the worst of the new pilots. Again, by far there was a clear number one here with "Cavemen," the Geico commercials turned sitcom, earning 51% of the vote as the worst pilot of the new season. Hugh Jackman's high profile musical drama "Viva Laughlin" and the Dylan McDermott-led rich playboy series "Big Shots" came in second and third with 15% & 12% respectively.

The CW's new show line-up of "Reaper," "Gossip Girl" and "Aliens in America" was easily voted the best slate of new shows for a network with 65% of the vote. All three shows have received good buzz and acclaim.

In previous years my pre-season picks haven't been far off the mark:
2004: Boston Legal, Desperate Housewives, House, Lost, Veronica Mars
2005: Bones, Commander-in-Chief, Prison Break, Supernatural
2006: Heroes, Shark, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Ugly Betty, Smith

This year the list is difficult as I've barely seen any of them, and what ones I have (eg. "Bionic Woman") have been major letdowns. Nevertheless this year I'd recommend:

    Definitely Check Out:
Back to You, Chuck, Dirty Sexy Money, Pushing Daisies, Reaper

    You Should Consider:
Aliens in America, Gossip Girl, Samantha Who?, The Sarah Connor Chronicles

For reference, here's the details on each network's new shows:
ABC - CBS - FOX - NBC - The CW

Also to give you an idea of my tastes, this past season I regularly watched:
"24", "30 Rock", "The 4400", "Battlestar Galactica", "Bones", "Boston Legal", "The Chaser's War on Everything", "The Colbert Report", "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," "Damages", "Desperate Housewives", "Doctor Who", "Entourage", "Family Guy", "Heroes", "Jekyll", "Life on Mars", "Lost", "Prison Break", "Real Time with Bill Maher", "Rome", "Shark", "The Shield", "The Simpsons", "Smallville", "South Park", "Spicks and Specks", "Supernatural", "Ugly Betty", "Veronica Mars" & "Wire in the Blood".
