  • Macdonald Talks "Time" & Hemingway
    By Garth FranklinWednesday May 2nd 2007 1:10am
image Keira Knightley's mother, playwright/screenwriter Sharman Macdonald, recently talked with The Guardian about her new film "The Best Time of Our Lives" in which her daughter stars.

The project deals with a quadrangle of relationships involving poet Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys), his wife Caitlin (Sienna Miller), his childhood sweetheart, Vera Phillips (Knightley), and her future husband, William Killick (Cillian Murphy).

The film won't shy away from Thomas' serial womanizing and alcoholism - ""He's a man who could talk any woman into bed. Great, great, great fun. I think you have to accept that's what he is, you can't explain it."

"Caitlin", a rival film about Thomas' tempestuous marriage backed by Pierce Brosnan is also planned - Macdonald insists though "it's not a race... it's a pleasure."

There's been talk of a lesbian scene involving Knightley and co-star Sienna Miller, but Macdonald flat out denies it - "What sex scene? It's a friendship between women. Does one have to define that as lesbian? I don't mind, but really."

Finally, Macdonald has also almost finished the first draft of a screenplay about the relationship of Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn and hopes that Gillian Anderson, who initiated the project, will appear.
