Reports are confusing, but it began yesterday with E! Online columnist Kristin Veitch reporting that much loved, but ratings soft "Veronica Mars" won't return for a fourth season according to the show's creator Rob Thomas himself. Sad news indeed.

Then things got confusing this morning. According to The Hollywood Reporter it seems not only is the show's fate still uncertain, but there's talk that the fourth season will see it completely retooled.

Seems Thomas came up with an idea to fast-forward a couple of years and have college student & part-time P.I. Mars now studying at the FBI Academy.

Thomas is said to be filming a trailer for the alternative fourth season of the Warner Bros. TV/Silver Pictures show, which will be submitted to the CW.

The network must then decide whether to pick up the series for another season and, if they do, whether to stick to the drama's current plot line or go with the new version.
