  • "Apocalypto" & "Letters" Globes Surprise
    By Garth FranklinTuesday November 28th 2006 6:29am
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has included "Apocalypto" and "Letters From Iwo Jima" on its shortlist of foreign-language film candidates at the upcoming Golden Globes.

The selection has raised some eyebrows as neither film is eligible for an Oscar in the foreign-language category due to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences's strict rules.

The inclusion has ruled both films out of the running for 'Best Picture - Drama' at the Globes, meaning 'Letters' in particular could surprise many when the Oscar nominations are announced reports Variety.

Indeed, the 'Foreign Language' film category at both the Globes and the Oscars are looking more crowded than ever with high-profile titles like "Black Book," "Curse of the Golden Flower," "The Lives of Others," "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Volver" all competing.

AMPAS has set Friday as the deadline to submit official screen credits and music submission forms for consideration for the 79th Academy Awards. Nominations will be announced on January 23rd.
