  • New Hannibal, Babel, Superman Reviews
    By Garth FranklinTuesday June 20th, 2006 6:44am
    Young Hannibal
"This is a very European style film which could hurt it. It's a revenge movie, but only does this plot really kick off until the middle of the film. Hannibal's story is a tragic one but when you start feeling sympathy for a character who is supposed to be the modern equivalent to Sherlock Holmes' arch nemesis Moriarty then it gets weird. I have no idea when this film is going to come out but it can use some work, but overall it was entertaining and certainly a step up from Hannibal and Red Dragon but no where near Silence or even Manhunter..." World Trade Center
"Here we have one of the most dramatic and moving experiences in modern history, and the movie manages to take all of those real images and all of those real stories and produce exactly NO real moments of emotion or truth. I actually kind of liked the trailer and was expecting a sort of big emotional cathartic event. But the movie manages to suck all of the life out of the true story, and only ever manages to squeak together any moment of epiphany toward the end..." (full review)

    Babel
"A somber movie that seems to dwell in the misery and desperation of its characters, but I think there is much more to it than that if you let it. There is a hope and a call for understanding so that our differences do not continue to tear us all apart. For me, this is a movie of unity at its core and I really hope that people can keep an open mind while watching it. It will stay with you long after you leave the theater and give you plenty to think about..." (full review)

    Macbeth
"The concept of the film is pretty simple: Take the Bard's classic story and set it in the Melbourne criminal underworld. The writers have chopped the play down to fit it into a much shorter time frame and the choice to use the original dialogue does not work a bit. Unlike Romeo and Juliet, which had a sort of timeless feel to the setting, this film is very much set in the now and hence the dialogue looks way out of place and the actors have no idea how to deliver it, leading to many, many awful performances... There is zero direction, of anything. Many of the choices were questionable and the huge emotional vacuum one feels at the end of the film is only filled by frustration at ones self for having wasted the time with this film..." (full review)

    Superman Returns (x3)
"Though enjoyable, Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns," the most eagerly awaited popcorn comic strip movie this summer is a mixed bag. While reenergizing the franchise that came to a halt with "Superman IV" and delivering the basic goods with some bravura special effects, the movie suffers from major shortcomings, chief among them are the disappointing villain, flatly played by Kevin Spacey, and a wooden performance from newcomer Brandon Routh in the lead..." (full review)

"It's terribly cast, poorly conceived, extremely light on action, features a romance that is not remotely romantic, doesn't feature a single memorable, "gosh, that was great" repeat-to-your-friends moment in a positive way..." (full review)

"Holy Caesar's Ghost! They've done it! - "Superman Returns" is super-exciting, super-fun, and super-bly performed! This is the only Superhero film you need to see this year!..." (full review)
