  • Rose Byrne - The New Bond Girl?
    By Garth FranklinMonday January 16th, 2006 10:28pm
At least four actresses screentested this past week for one of two roles in the forthcoming James Bond film "Casino Royale". Bond's first love Vesper Lynd is the lead female role in the film.

The other day, MI6 revealed three of the women who were in contention to star alongside the new 007 Daniel Craig were Rose Byrne, Vera Farmiga and Rachael Stirling.

Now, the British tabloids report that Rose Byrne, the 26-year-old Aussie actress mentioned above, has landed the part. An insider says "All the actresses had to perform a bedroom scene with Daniel where Bond says he is leaving the service to be with Vesper Lynd. Barbara Broccoli was particularly impressed by Rose". Byrne would appear to have beaten out Farmiga ("The Manchurian Candidate", "15 Minutes") and Sterling (TV's "Tipping the Velvet).

Byrne has amassed an impressive resume in her decade of acting experience both at home in Australia and abroad. Her first work included roles in the failed Martin Henderson-led TV soap "Echo Point", followed soon after by the highly successful Heath Ledger/Bryan Brown gangster movie "Two Hands". She followed that up with roles in international films such as a handmaiden in "Star Wars: Episode II", "City of Ghosts", "I Capture the Castle", "Wicker Park" and the BBC mini-series "Casanova". To date most American audiences will recognise her as Brad Pitt's love interest in "Troy". She'll also be seen this year in Sofia Coppola's lavish biopic "Marie-Antoinette" and Danny Boyle's sci-fi thriller "Sunshine".

A confirmation of who has won the part is expected this coming Friday. Meanwhile, French actor Simon Abkarian has landed the role of the villainous Dimitrius according to Le Blog Cinenews. Aston Martin also confirmed they will be supplying their all new DBS in the film.
