  • Reader Reviews: November 13th-17th 2004

    Alone in the Dark
"I have no desire to get any deeper into the plot of the film... not because I'm wary of giving away too much of the plot, but because I really don't want to go back over that bullshit. It doesn't help that due to Boll's amazing talent to somehow muddle simple stories the plot really doesn't go anywhere after about the first 20 minutes. Seriously, after the first reel change the characters just seem to tread water for the rest of the movie. The big reveal at the end doesn't make any sense and nothing in the climax of the film is earned, just kinda thrown in there..." (full review)

    Closer
"This film has far more questions than answers, and you leave the theater understanding that real love comes only once the story-telling has stopped, once the narrative collapses and we are simply left with each other. When we, people, choose to stop inventing romances, which are entertainment, not love, and choose to let the stories stop, then we begin to live in real appreciation of the other person in the relationship; and when we choose to leave each other, to betray the fundamental agreement on our relationship and identity, the drama and the stories grind to a start again. Among many other things, this movie is about two people who realize the value of the what they have, and two people who don't..." (full review)

    The Phantom of the Opera
"I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I think that based on what else I see on the release horizon that "Phantom of the Opera" will be a heavy favorite going into the Academy Awards. I don't see anything else being easy Oscar Bait. See this film. If you haven't seen the stage production it is a good enough film. If you are a fan of the stage production (and get over the fact that M.C. was simply not castable in this production) I think you will really enjoy this as well..." (full review)

    Blade: Trinity
"In summation, "Blade: Trinity" looks like it will be a success this winter. Fans of the original "Blade" will be satisfied, and those of us who enjoyed its sequel will be impressed. Is it safe that next winter's "Batman Begins" is safe in the hands of director Christopher Nolan and writer Goyer, because if anything, "Blade" is sharp..." (full review)

    Cinderella Man
"No matter what, though, I think Ron Howard's got a winner here. His direction is very assured and convincing. If he could just tighten up just a few of the longer scenes, I think he'd have an even better movie. Akiva Goldsman's script is outstanding. He's written a convincing story about a man who became a hero to millions of Americans just when they needed it most. And the reason he was a hero was because he was a reflection of every other decent, hard-working guy out there who was doing his best to help himself and his loved ones survive. Along with the rest of the audience, I clapped and cheered at the movie's end, and I left the theater feeling great..." (full review)

    In Good Company
"In Good Company is one of the best movies I have seen this year. It's got it all; compelling drama, lots of laughs, and an excellent cast. This holiday season, if you want to avoid all the massively big budgeted blockbusters and the awards pandering limited releases, then you must go and check it out. You won't see anything else more cleverly produced this year. It's a shame it doesn't arrive till nearly New Year's..." (full review)
