'Ranger1138' drops in this extensive report of a David Goyer, Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds panel for "Blade: Trinity" that took place in Dallas recently and the trio revealed some ambitious DVD plans for all three movies, the possibility of another direct "Blade" sequel and some juicy secrets about what happened on the third film's Canadian set:
A 163-second clip was shown. This features the first conversation between Blade and the Nightstalkers in the Nightstalker lair. It's mostly Wesley making comments on the dress and weapons of choice used by some of the major players. But you can see that humor plays a bigger role in this new movie by the lines given to HannibalKing. The panel of David Goyer, Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel addressed the crowd late. And the panel ended early. So this won't be too long of a report.
The biggest news, other than Bat related tid bits, listed by David Goyer
came in the arena of DVD. David said that New Line is considering a
trilogy box with new extended cuts of all three films. Each director is
being asked to contribute and it is said that Blade 1 has 12 minutes
placed back into it's running time. There were some killer extras
mentioned as well with gag reels, on set footage of key scenes and new
commentaries also being a possibility. No release date is being
mentioned and no telling if this will be a repackaged version of the
already considered director's cut for Trinity slated for retail next
year. As it is there will be a single disc version, a dual disc
director's cut and now a possible alternate version in this proposed
trilogy box. And you thought collecting Aliens sets were draining on the
pocketbook.
David said that he originally thought of a trilogy for the Blade films
but the series has greatly diverted from what he originally planned.
Which leads me to believe that the plans for Bats could be just as
altered at some point down the road.
Other famous characters were planned for the series but they were either
dropped during a story pitch or Marvel refused to license them. The
Deacon Frost character is said to have some Morbious qualities as a
result of this problem. Frank Drake was the other character green lit by
Marvel when David got Hannibal King by the way. He still has permission
to use him, however, he doesn't know if he would work out with a
Nightstalkers spin off.
There are no plans for Blade 4 as this film has a final ending to the
series. The Nightstalkers, however, could be spun off into it's own
franchise with Blade as a possible cameo. David did say that there was a
way to do a 4th film for Blade if new Line really wanted to do so but it
didn't sound like it was up for any discussions yet. Box office numbers
will tell the tale.
Ryan felt like he was Dick Van Dyke most of the time on the set. He was
constantly falling, tripping or dropping things. He also thanked New
Line for paying for his new found "action hero" profile. He would have
never devoted this much time in the gym without getting paid for it and
now he needs a sequel to keep his 20 added pounds of mass.
Both Jessica and Ryan worked out 3 hours a day 6 days a week prior and
during the shoot. New Line also paid for dietitians and specialized
menus.
Jessica had 1 hour of archery training a day on top of the other
regiment. One shot called for her to be 20 feet in the air in a harness
while she shot an arrow down into the camera. Plexiglas and other
materials were used to shield the crew while only a small hole was left
open for the camera. David goes on to say proudly that Jessica's
training paid off as the first take found her shooting an arrow directly
into the $350,000 camera which destroyed it instantly. David followed
with "tell me you got that?". He also said that coverage cameras caught
everything and the footage of the stunned crew would be a DVD extra.
Ryan was asked for his favorite moment on set. He said that his battle
with the WWE's Triple H was a high point of his cinematic career. He
praised HHH's work in making the scene look fantastic because otherwise
he wipes the cage with him in every other shot. David said that he loves
Ryan's reaction shot when he breaks Triple H's arm and the following
"why me" shot when HHH pops it back into place to continue the battle.
Ryan stated several times that he loves David for giving him a role, and
this is Ryan's words, "Hannibal is so much like an Indiana Jones kind of
guy". Ryan naturally got a few Van Wilder quotes yelled out to him
during the panel. He was asked if he felt typed cast and he answered
with the traditional "I am happy to work on whatever I am offered". He
was asked if he would think of taking on other comic book roles. It was
then mentioned that Ryan was being looked at for some new Flash project.
No word if this is Wally West or Barry Allen yet. He was asked about the
Dead Pool rumors and he said that he was not playing Dead Pool. He felt
that King and Dead Pool had a lot of similar qualities. And Ryan said
that he took Jim Rockford from the "Rockford Files" as part of his base
for playing King. Make of that what you will.
Jessica took many questions from the younger girls, which there were a
lot of by the way, on her possible return to 7th Heaven. She ended up
kind of answering the same question several times. She felt that it was
time to grow up and leave the show. She still liked it but it was like
high school and now she wants to expand into movies. She would do a
"final episode" if the series is to end this year if they even ask her
to that is.
Jessica told a story where she did her final fight in one long master
shot. She kicks the crap out of 18 people but it won't come off as the
long shot due to the editing of Blade interspersed within her fight.
David joked about it being another for the director's cut DVD.
Someone asked David which Blade comic was the best out there. David
responded with "the greatest Blade comic hasn't been written yet". He
felt that none of them really kept the character in focus and he
jokingly compared it to the elusive great American novel. And personally
I can see 1,000 monkeys on typewriters at Marvel. But I digress.
Jessica talked about her time on the Chainsaw set. She described it as a
fast shoot with no money and little sleep. She said that there was no
real direction on the film which effected the cast's sense of continuity
for any given scene. She was surprised that the final product came out
so well because she didn't think it was going to be that way in
production. She loves the film and she wants to do more roles that break
her away from the WB image she has surrounding her.
This panel also had some of the weirdest questions I have ever heard in
my 20+ years of conventions. One person asked Jessica if she had felt
that her career had recovered since "Summer Catch". Jessica naturally
was kind of stunned but this got a huge laugh from the audience. Another
person, and remember this was near Ft. Worth Texas, asked the panel if
Wesley was as black as he looked on screen. No kidding. The entire room
went silent and there was no real pick up of questions for almost a half
a minute. There was also a guy in the audience wearing a Press Pass who
asked Jessica about her first time on film. Apparently, and this made
Jessica blush something awful, he produced some short feature that had a
9 year old Jessica in blue body paint and red hair. The title wasn't
mentioned openly and Jessica seemed to want to move on once she
acknowledged the gentleman in the crowd. Like I said there were some
real odd questions/comments.
