  • "Hotel Rwanda" Wins Toronto

    sp; The Hollywood ReporterThe Toronto International Film Festival wrapped over the weekend with "Jiminy Glick in Lalawood" starring comic Martin Short in his famous character closing out the festivities.

    The Hollywood Reporter indicates that in regards to awards, war-themed movies took the top prizes with Terry George's British/South Africa/Italian co-production "Hotel Rwanda" about an ordinary man selflessly saving lives during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, grabbing the fest's top nod - the People's Choice Award. 'Rwanda' beat out such titles as "I, Claudia," "Cape of Good Hope," "Electric Shadows," "House of Flying Daggers" and "Motorcycle Diaries" for the award.

    Pete Travis' "Omagh," earned the Discovery Award, which was voted on by about 750 media attending Toronto. The Irish-British co-production was about the 1998 bombing of an Irish market town. "In My Father's Den," the first feature from New Zealand director Brad McGann, took the Fipresci prize.
