Just a fortnight away from general release, all sorts of behind-the-scenes craziness is rumoured to be afoot in regards to the new Spielberg/Hanks comedy about a European guy who, due to extraordinary circumstances, is forced to reside inside the JFK airport terminal.
So what is confirmed? Dreamworks has stated that test screenings of the film have yielded great reaction and some glowing reviews
are already online such as Dave Poland's at MCN. They also confirm that today they've cancelled all of this weeks press screenings, pushing them back to next week. The premiere, which was supposed to be this Friday, has been delayed til next Wednesday.
The reasoning for the short delay? Well now here is where it gets interesting. Today's Variety indicates that things were held up by the John Williams score -- due to Williams' work on "Harry Potterand The Prisoner of Azkaban" -- and by Spielberg, who is intent on tweaking the pic. Others say that the film's ending was a sticking point, and that reshoots were taking place as late as Tuesday although Dreamworks would not confirm or deny
such rumours.
A few hours before the Variety scoop broke, a report up at AICN also indicated the studio was reshooting the film's ending yesterday. The reasoning for such a late reshoot comes down to talk that despite their official comments, test screening reaction wasn't necessarily bad (although one review on the site did tear it to pieces), rather it was just not as ecstatic as the studio had high hopes for.
In any case the film's date hasn't changed, it's still on target for a June 18th release and even if all these reports are true, it'll still be one of the least troubled productions opening this month as many of June's releases have had their own major post-production and last minute difficulties.
