A recent issue of The Hollywood Reporter announced that Escape Artists and comic book powerhouse Platinum Studios ("Jeremiah", "Dylan Dog") are teaming up for some sci-fi escapism with the high-concept tentpole "Cowboys and Aliens" for Columbia Pictures. Well now today comes some additional info:
"Cowboys & Aliens" forms a key part of the extensive history of Platinum Studios's growing universe of over 1,000 characters, known as 'the Macroverse'. The story of the comic created by Scott Michael Rosenberg, and the film presumably takes place in the Old West, where cowboys and Indians must put aside their differences to battle an alien invasion.
Rosenberg, who headed up Malibu Comics during the "Men in Black" success era, says "This comic fills in the past of our universe. Our upcoming comic UNIQUE, by Dean Motter and Stefano Cardoselli, explores the structure of the universe with its multiple dimensions, and other comics coming soon will go into the present, the future, and other parts of the mythology. It's a really rich setting for stories, and it's great to see it coming together. I've always felt that COWBOYS & ALIENS would make a great movie, so it's really exciting that it's moving forward"
The man is producing a surprisingly large slate of high-profile live action feature films and television series based on current and upcoming comic books aside from 'Cowboys'. "Unique" is setup at Touchstone Pictures with David Goyer directing, Michael Cooney writing, and Rosenberg and David Heyman producing. "Prime", based on another Malibu comic book, at Universal; Nathan Never, based on the popular Italian comic book, with DreamWorks SKG; and Mal Chance, about a female assassin taking down the mob, at Miramax.
