  • Assorted Pre-Production Gossip
    By Garth FranklinWednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 7:59PM
'Underwear' is back with all sorts of gossip on a variety of upcoming films:

    "Sahara"
The much maligned Clive Cussler project from hell scored a new draft that is AMAZING and filming is finally about to get underway. Josh Friedman wrote the latest draft (almost a page one rewrite) and has cleared up all of the messy story details from before to create a solid action-adventure film with more subtle humor and tons of peril. Definitely will make the studio money if Matthew can actually prove his draw and outlive that damn Vanity Fair curse.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"
Martin Freeman's deal is set for Arthur Dent. Mos Def's deal closed for Ford Prefect. Zoe Deschanel is closed for Tricia McMillian/Tril Lian. Robert Downey Jr. had an offer for Zaphod Beeblebox, offer was pulled for insurance reasons and because he wanted too many changes to the script..

    "Bye Bye Birdie"
Director Jon Chu is sitting down with a group of girls this weekend to find the female lead. Among them - Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, Evan Rachel Wood & Lindsay Lohan. The front runner appears to be Mandy Moore, though producers LOVE the idea of Jessica Simpson & aren't afraid of her as being box office poison.

    "John Carter of Mars"
Rodriguez is actually NEGOTIATING for the adaptation (the deal is nearly closed). Look for this project to go super fast once he signs on as Paramount is in desperate need of a franchise. Producers are looking at Josh Duhmel for 'John'.
