Speaking with Empire Online, M:I-3 screenwriter Frank Darabont talked about the whole musical chairs game being played with directors of late on the third "Mission" film and seems resolutely unconcerned with it, rather he's more fascinated in the new direction his script takes the franchise:
"This is going into a very character-driven and gritty - much grittier than the first two - kind of place. Dealing in a more immediately graspable and relevant reality, globally speaking. It's much more in line with certain things that are going on in the headlines and if I said any more than that I think Tom might have me killed.
I think it's going to be really terrific whoever directs it. The choices so far for director have been very interesting, which just shows where Tom's head is. He wants all of these to be very different, and indeed the first two were, but I think the third is going to just kick the ass of the first two."
Shooting is now aiming to begin in early September.
