"Almost Famous" helmer Cameron Crowe has just begun shooting his "Elizabethtown" project and has given his first in production interview to The Courier-Journal about the film.
So what music will you use in the movie? Do you have it all sorted out?
"I do. But if you don't mind, I'm keeping it close to the vest because I want it to be a surprise. You know, there is a lot of authentic music that has its roots in this area, then there is all kinds of other music in there too. But I want it to feel authentic, and it's music that you hear when you are living here. Even though Orlando's character doesn't live here in the movie, he finds his family here in Kentucky and that's what the story is".
Tell me more about the story
"For me, it's about the strength of the life force, and it's about community and family. Technically, it's about a guy who experiences failure and fiasco. ... He's a shoe designer who meticulously begins to plan a very creative suicide for himself. And on the very brink of following through, he gets a truly tragic phone call, which is that his father died of a heart attack while visiting family in Kentucky. So our hero, Orlando, ... comes back to Kentucky and Elizabethtown and along the way finds every reason to live. And believe it or not, it's a comedy. It's a little bit in the vein of "Jerry Maguire" and "Almost Famous" and movies I love, like "Harold and Maude" and "Local Hero." It's a movie, hopefully, with a lot of rich characters"
