McG Definitely Off Superman

First he's on, then he's off, then he's replaced, then he's back on again, now it's off. Sigh, here we go again.

Many will remember the other week reports that "Charlie's Angels" helmer McG who had been attached to the "Superman" project for a long time was taken off the project and had been replaced by Michael Bay, with a cryptic post (later removed) on MichaelBay.Com hinting at the story. Then The Hollywood Reporter ran an article (with confirmations/denials from reps) indicating McG was still on and the rumours of Bay's involvement were false.

Cut to now, today's Variety reports that McG, who was prepping the tentpole for a late 2004 start, is now off the project after he and Warner Bros. were unable to reach an agreement over location and budget matters. McG hoped to shoot "Superman" in North America, specifically New York. Warners is reportedly already building sets at Australia's Fox studios which would save the mega-budget production tens of millions.

McG says "When I flew to New York to scout, I became enamored with our greatest American city. It was clear to me that this was Metropolis. As a filmmaker, I felt it was inappropriate to try to capture the heart of America on another continent. I look at Superman as a character that embodies all that is beautiful about America".

With McG gone, will Bay takeover? They've not commented since their denial the other week. Bryan Singer was rumoured the other day as well but is already in development of both "Logan's Run" and "X3". McG himself is pondering his next project which includes the likes of "Evel Knievel" at Universal and "Cleopatra" and "Hot Wheels" at Sony.
