Billy Crystal Pic: "Billy Crystal has made a deal to star in, direct, co-write and produce an untitled comedy for New Line Cinema. In the pic, the U.S. president is visited by Death's "repo man" (Crystal), who informs the commander in chief that his time is up. The president has until midnight to get his priorities in order, including his personal affairs and affairs of state. Crystal will write the script with Quinton Peeples..." (more info). Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House: "Revolution Studios is near a deal with RKO Pictures to acquire remake rights to "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House." The film will be scripted by Hank Nelken and fasttracked as a directing vehicle for "Daddy Day Care" helmer Steve Carr. The original 1948 pic starred Cary Grant and Myrna Loy as a husband and wife who move from a crowded Manhattan apartment to escape the rat race of the big city. The idealistic Blandings finds that moving into a fixer-upper in the idyllic suburbs is a lot more difficult than he imagined..." (more info). Out: "New Line has acquired the Japanese novel "Out" and will draft it into an Americanized thriller that will be directed by Hideo Nakata. Written by Natsuo Kirino, the book is a thriller about four female factory workers who band together when one kills her abusive husband. The Americanized version will be done in the spirit of "Thelma & Louise"..." (more info). Prelude to Space: "Screenwriter Michael McGruther has optioned the rights to Arthur C. Clarke's first published novel, "Prelude to Space," and David Bennahum's memoir "Extra Life: Coming of Age in Cyberspace." "Space," published in 1954, is a prophetic space adventure about man landing on the moon. Pic, being adapted by McGruther ("Tigerland"), will be a space adventure about discovery and human sacrifice at a time when the true space age is about to begin. Clarke is expected to be a consultant on pic. Buffalonickel will produce. "Extra Life," named for the videogame term, is an adventure/drama set in 1980 about the pioneering of the digital culture..." The Bill From My Father: "Bob Nelson has penned an original script inspired by Bernard Cooper's L.A. magazine article "The Bill From My Father" for Warner Bros. and producer David Heyman's Heyday Films. Story, first heard on NPR, concerns a young man who quit his promising corporate job to find himself. Soon thereafter, he received a large bill from his father requesting reimbursement for the total cost of his upbringing..." (more info). Woody Allen's Next: "Brian Cox, Matthew Goode and James Nesbitt have joined the cast of Woody Allen's untitled British comedy, which is set to begin shooting July 12. Previously announced cast members include Scarlett Johansson, Emily Mortimer and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers..." (more info). Bratz: "Scribe Dana Fox is in business with 20th Century Fox on two feature films. Fox is fast at work penning the feature film version of "Bratz," based on MGA Entertainment's popular Bratz fashion dolls. The log line of the feature, which will be a mixed-media project with live-action elements as well as some CGI or animation, is being closely guarded, but it is said to focus on the theme of girl power..." (more info). Fifty Percent: "Warner Independent Pictures is in for "Fifty Percent." Warners' specialty film arm is developing the dark comedy. Writer Darin Mark is on board to pen the script, which follows three waitresses who agree to marry for money, get divorced and take 50% of each man's net worth so they can start their real lives on a tropical island. Five years later, one woman is ready to cash out whether the other girls are in or not..." (more info). Never Was: "Ian McKellen, Aaron Eckhart, Brittany Murphy, Nick Nolte and Alan Cumming are in negotiations for the indie drama "Never Was." Marking the directorial debut of writer Joshua Michael Stern, the feature follows a Yale graduate (Eckhart) who gets a job at the mental institution where his novelist father (Nolte) spent the last years of his life. Once there, he meets a schizophrenic man (McKellen) who proves a mysterious link to his father's material. Murphy plays a reporter. Heading for a September shoot in Vancouver..." (more info). The Longest Yard: "William Fichtner has joined the cast of "The Longest Yard" at Paramount Pictures. DVD News: Details & art is up for Friday the 13th Boxset, Iron Giant: SE, Species: SE & Stargate: SG-1 Season 7. Flora Plum: The latest word on Jodie Foster's everlasting project is that it will start filming in March/April 2005 with the original cast except for Claire Danes who probably will be replaced by Kirsten Dunst according to jodiefoster.nu. The Devil's Rejects: Five new images and a release date announcement is up at Bloody Disgusting. The Punisher (DVD): Davis DVD reports that Lions Gate's September 7th release of The Punisher will be released with a limited edition comic book-style "chase cover." These discs will be limited to 10,000 copies and will be distributed randomly at retail. On a brighter note, all of the Punisher discs will come packaged with a 28-page prequel comic, written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Tim Bradsheet, pointing the way to the first scene in the film. The Shawshank Redemption (DVD): To help prime the pump for the new DVD, watch for a special two-week limited theatrical re-release to begin on September 24th in selected cities.
