Simon West is set to helm a quite different project next - a $38 million non-fiction account of Japanese atrocities in WWII.
Twitchfilm reports that West will begin filming next month a movie version of Iris Chang's "The Rape of Nanking".
The story covers the Nanking Massacre, a six-week campaign of horror in the late 1930's when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded the Chinese city and proceeded to loot, rape and murder between 150,000 and 300,000 people.
The script by William Macdonald will tell the story through the eyes of a mother and daughter.
To date West's career hasn't exactly been one of note. His films include such cinematic woofers as "Tomb Raider", "When a Stranger Calls", "The General's Daughter" and "Con Air".
The joint US/British/Chinese production will be released in China in December of 2007 and internationally in 2008.
