Online Piracy Not Really A Problem

The rampant screaming about the threat of piracy looks to be mostly that - rampant screaming.

The Movie Blog reports that in a recent survey of 1,725 North American online consumers aged 18+, only 5% have rented or bought a legal digital movie download, and even less watch illegal downloads.

Why are they ignoring digitally-acquired films and illegal downloads? Because "they were satisfied with their current providers and the rental market".

So much also for that whole 'online movie downloads replacing DVDs' argument that tech geeks love to stand on. The reasons people aren't downloading movies even though they have the equipment and access to? long wait times, high prices, lack of extras and lack of portability (ie. watching on TV screens).

Much like many other 'looming threats' to society over the decades, piracy seems to be over exaggerated by the media and more importantly the overbearing current security restrictions on end users rather than the real criminals (the suppliers of pirated material) are having little to no effect on solving any problems.
