Lions Roar For Cruise, Streep

By Garth Franklin Wednesday November 15th 2006 12:27AM

The newly revived, Cruise/Wagner-led United Artists has made its first acquisition - the Afghanistan-set drama "Lions for Lambs".

Robert Redford will direct and star alongside Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise in the ensemble film which, like "Traffic" and "Babel", mixes three interconnected storylines.

One has Cruise as a congressman under investigation by a dogged journalist (Streep), another has Redford as an idealistic professor who attempts to inspire a privileged student in his class.

The final involved a pair of American soldiers wounded in enemy territory, one of them being Redford's former student according to the trades.

Written by Matthew Michael Carnahan ("The Kingdom"), production is scheduled to begin at the end of January.

An expected worldwide release is set for late 2007 through MGM.
