Universal Pictures has optioned Neal Shusterman novel "Everlost" as a potential directing vehicle for Gary Ross. Shusterman will adapt the script himself reports Variety.

"Everlost" focuses on Nick and Allie, teenage passengers in cars that collide. They meet in a netherworld known as Everlost, unsure if they're alive. The teens try to navigate an odd world that is populated by young people from different historical periods, with a couple of baddies in the mix.

The book is the first of a series, and the hope is to hatch a franchise. Ross plans to next direct an untitled historical epic, and is also developing the drama "Vegas 55" about the first integrated Las Vegas casino.

Ross' Larger Than Life production company is also developing other family vehicles including the CG-animated "The Tale of Despereaux", the young boy witnessing a sea monster film "Sightings", and the wishes & curses themed "Tales From the Wishworks Factory".
