Woo's Gangster Musical

By Garth Franklin Wednesday January 14th 2004 11:20PM

So John Woo isn't immediately a name you would place in the same sentence as say Stephen Sondheim or Bob Fosse, but give him time he might just convert every macho action man out there to join their nearest kickline.

Woo is finally going to do the musical he's been longing to do for years, and very enthusiastically spoke about it to Empire Online: "We have almost got a finished script right now. It is an ambitious project. I have been dreaming of making this for seven years.

It is an American gangster story, based on a true story. In the 1920s there was a gang boss who was also a great dancer. It’s also a love story – this guy was in love with two women. So it’s a new kind of challenge, a new kind of experiment".

Woo's ready to play with our minds - "There’s going to be a lot of dance and a lot of action. Sometimes the action will look pretty much like dance and the dance will look pretty much like action" and is keen to show another side of himself too once its all done - "I really love comedy. I made seven or eight. Of course I’d like to make a really good comedy in Hollywood. Comedies like It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World or The Pink Panther – I’d like to make one of those. But no matter what I make I’m not going to change my own style".

        Thanks to 'Antoine'
