Shoot 'Em Up ""Shoot 'Em Up" just never settled with me. This is a film that, I think at least, is very much in the vein of KILL BILL and SIN CITY. It's anchored in this hyper-violent surrealism that exists in a world that you need to just buy or you're never going to enjoy a moment of the movie. I bought "Kill Bill". I bought "Sin City". The problem is, "Shoot 'Em Up", unlike the former two movies, never made the sale..." (full review)
""Shoot 'Em Up" delivers on its promise and we literally get an uncountable body and bullet count. They've got cajones for putting this out because it ain't PC friendly and I'm very happy to see a return to see some real violence in movies..." (full review)
Borat "For the bigger festival pictures that already have domestic distribution deals, it's not unusual to see security guards in the front corners of the theatre, using special viewing devices to ensure nobody is pirating the film. What is unusual to see are security guards nearly bent over at the waist from laughing while their backs are to the screen..." (full review) "At 82 minutes, "Borat" is a good-natured mockumentary, in which half of the targets are "safely" chosen; the other half explode with ferocious energy and uproarious humor. Though the material is uneven, the movie contains enough caustic interactions and sharp observations to please larger audiences than S.B. Cohen's core fans..." (full review)
Little Children "Awesome dry narration of the proceedings to go along with the overall awesomeness of just about everything else with Children. This should be an Oscar contender across the board..." (full review)
School for Scoundrels "I just saw School for Scoundrels, which is pretty bad and very boring. The jokes are stupid and cheap. It's like Scary Movie 3: you can only laugh at the guy hitting his head so many times before you feel like killing yourself. The plot is awful, although it may be a good thing that they spent a lot of time developing plot rather than trying to make us laugh..." (full review)
The Lookout "The movie plays out well though, and there are a few kickass moments where people cheered in the theater. I just don't think it's a movie that people will be talking about in five years. All the main actors performed very well, and the movie definitely is far from being crap. It's definitely got a certain integrity.. it's a pretty smart movie, and it's absolutely not mass-market-appeal garbage..." (full review)
Sunshine "If it stuck to the philosophical side more instead of the typical hollywood contrivances, I would have enjoyed it much more. It's enjoyable, for sure, but that final act character (if you didn't read the spoilers, don't ask) completely ruins the movie. Other than that, I only have minor quibbles (Evans' delivery, some of the physics clearly not believable, etc.). This movie aimed a lot higher than it reached. I suppose Danny Boyle had a chance to look into the sun, and what he found was a mediocre movie trying to be something more..." (full review)
For Your Consideration "It's all kind of a one-joke premise, but when you think about it, that's how Guest films have played in the past. But his other offerings did a much better job of fleshing out that one joke to a 90-minute movie..." (full review)
"FYC really pleases the crowd in that at the beginning of the movie you chuckle, but by the end it has you in stitches. The theatre I saw it with loved every minute of it; there were uproars of laughter even we first saw certain characters. No actual jokes were needed..." (full review)
The Number 23 "The Number 23 is compelling and held my attention all the way through. But I never became emotionally involved. Maybe it's because it's purposely unclear where the danger is coming from. Maybe it's because it drags in the middle (too many redundant scenes) and needs to get to the ending twists sooner. The movie is easy to shrug off once out of the theatre..." (full review)
