After a ninth consecutive weekend as the most popular movie at the foreign box office, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" is about to become only the third movie to gross more than $1 billion in global ticket sales reports Reuters.

The global record is held by 1997's "Titanic" with a global boxoffice of $1.8 billion, while 2003's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" ended up with $1.1 billion.

The film has pulled in $414 million domestically, the sixth-highest on the all-time list, and $583 million outside the US. The U.K. at $94 million and Japan with $78 million were the biggest foreign markets.

The success has been a saviour to a foreign film market which has shown differing trends with US audiences. 58.4% of "Pirates" money was earned overseas - a relatively even split. In comparison "The Da Vinci Code" (71.1%), "Ice Age: The Meltdown" (69.8%) and "Mission: Impossible III" (66.2%) all performed significantly better in foreign markets than on the domestic front.

On the flip side "Pirates" outpaced films like "X-Men: The Last Stand" (46.9%), "Superman Returns" (47.9%), "Cars" (41.7%) and "Over the Hedge" (49.5%) in foreign territories ratio wise.
