The Colin Farrell drama about Pocahantas and John Smith is in production, but today 'Sting Ray' comes forth with a scoop indicating the original vision for the movie may have been quite different:
"A certain Indian actress mentioned to me some time back about a casting session she had attended for Terrence Malick, and I thought nothing of it for the longest time until I read on your site about 'A New World' and the age difference between Smith and Pocahontas, and how the film has still yet to cast its female lead, it suddenly clicked with me that she might have read for the role of Pocahontas.
She grudgingly confirmed this with me, and went on to tell me that she read with Malick and a New Zealand actor who looked familiar to her and seemed to have been cast at the time as Smith. She was not asked to subdue her Indian accent, and read through the entire script for 4-6 hours. She didn't have many kind words to say about the script, and said that Mallick was constantly rewriting the script as she read it, and they went over the new lines right there.
This was many months before Colin had been cast, and the script may well have changed, and heck, she could still get asked to take the part, but she doubts she will be, and wasn't even sure she'd take it if she was. But the fact that they have been casting Pocahontas for this long suggests they have a different vision for the character, and I was dubious about the idea of casting a very Indian actress to play a Native American character".
Thanks again to 'Stingray'
