Michelle Pfeiffer is in final negotiations to play the villain of the cast of New Line Cinema's adaptation of the hit Broadway musical comedy "Hairspray" reports the trades.
"Hairspray" was based on the 1988 John Waters comedy about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show. The latest version will be based on New Line's Tony-winning Broadway adaptation of the film.
Pfeiffer would play Velma von Tussel, a former beauty queen (Miss Baltimore Crabs) who can't move on and who is the producer of the dance show. She joins the likes of John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Amanda Bynes, Zac Efron and newcomer Nikki Blonsky who are already aboard.
A September 5th start of shooting date has been locked, and production will take place entirely in Toronto (plans to shoot some footage in Baltimore are gone).
The studio has set a December 21st 2007 release date as well, moving the film back from the Summer.
