Freema Agyeman New Who Sidekick

By Garth Franklin Wednesday July 5th 2006 08:59AM

Newcomer Freema Agyeman is taking over from Billie Piper as Doctor Who's new sidekick, it was announced today. The 27-year-old former "Crossroads" actress will play Martha Jones in the third series which begins production in three weeks for broadcast in the UK next year.

More surprising though is that Agyeman appeared in last week's second series penultimate episode "Army of Ghosts" in an entirely different role - that of a Torchwood secretary who meets a cruel fate at the hands of the Cybermen.

Neither Piper nor Agyeman will be appearing in the Christmas special as producers say they're "doing something special". Piper meets her demise in this coming Saturday's second series finale "Doomsday".

Highlights of the third season include Who meeting with Shakespeare, an expected visit by Captain Jack Harkness, and of course a returning classic Who villain race that's expected to be the big villains of the season. The first episode of the series in fact is rumoured to see the an updated version of The Ice Warriors as the antagonists.
