Charlize Theron has managed a coup - landing Oscar-nominated British director Alan Parker ("The Commitments", "Evita") from a five-year hiatus to helm "The Ice at the Bottom of the World" reports the trades.

Theron is set to star in and produce the ensemble family drama about a grizzled Navy captain who reluctantly retires for health reasons to his home in Chesapeake Bay. Upon arrival he finds his daughter (Theron) has become an out-of-control heroin addict and the single mother of a multi-racial child.

The $20 million indie is being produced through Picturehouse, with New Line handling worldwide distribution and marketing.
