Acquisitions: Ghouly, Now, None, Chair

"Mandate Pictures has picked up the film rights to "The Ghouly Boys," a children's comic book series, with Benderspink attached to produce. "Ghouly" follows four sweet, young monsters -- a wolf boy, a kid zombie, a young sea monster and the son of the boogeyman plus their flight-challenged pet bat -- who have a hard time fitting in with the "normal" human kids until they find each other. Universal Pictures is asking "How Soon Is Now?" picking up the comedy pitch from Jason Major and Patrick T. Gorman, the creators of the hit stage show "The Star Wars Trilogy in 30 Minutes." The story follows a man named Tom McGregor who travels back in time to his high school days in 1985. There he tries to fix the worst three days of his life in order to give himself a better future. New Line has bought comedy pitch "None of Her Business" from scribes Cindy and Donald Hewitt for Mosaic Media Group to produce. Story revolves around a corporate exec who's fired but gets her job back after she disguises herself as a man. Workplace romp turns gender office politics upside down. The Hewitts penned screenplays for the English-language adaptations of Hayao Miyazaki's animated "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Spirited Away"..." (full details)

Indie Roadside Attractions is joining forces with DVD-by-mail firm Netflix to acquire North American rights to Jay and Mark Duplass' romantic comedy "The Puffy Chair." Under the joint venture, Roadside will release the film theatrically, co-financing all prints and advertising with Netflix. The companies will split video and TV release costs, with Netflix co-promoting the theatrical release on its Web site. A June theatrical release is tentatively scheduled..." (full details)
