Whilst its scheduled for release this Sunday, Terrence Malick confirmed to Variety that he hasn't finished tinkering with his latest project "The New World" despite the deadline.
A 149-minute cut of the film was shown to critics and advanced screening audiences the other week. Since those screenings, Malick has has been trimming the historical drama which is now said to include 15-20 minutes of tweaks and trims - although there's no major chunks cut out.
New Line will release the longer version this weekend, will show it at awards screenings and has sent out DVD screeners of it. Execs will then see a shorter version soon and decide which version will go out when the film expands late next month. Malick is expected to deliver the new cut either later this week or early next week.
The move comes after mixed early reviews from critics that often cite the length and languid pacing. Even two of the better reviewed films of the season - "King Kong" and "Munich" have both drawn a lot of criticism over their runtimes.
