"Brokeback Mountain" continues sweeping many of the recent critical awards of late, but other films are starting to rear their heads here and there across several categories.
The Las Vegas Film Critics gave "Brokeback" top nods with Best Film, and wins for Heath Ledger and Director Ang Lee. "Crash" scored best script, Reese Witherspoon best actress for "Walk the Line", and supporting nods to Matt Dillon and Frances McDormand.
The Dallas Fort Worth Critics and the Southeastern Film Critics showered the cowboys with love - both associations giving it best film, director and screenplay. They were also in agreement on other awards - Philip Seymour Hoffman as best actor for "Capote" and Felicity Huffman best actress for "Transamerica". The DFW gave supporting nods to Matt Dillon and Catherine Keener, the SEFC lauded Paul Giamatti and Amy Adams. "Crash" also got an original screenplay nod from the SEFC.
The San Diego Film Critics however gave no awards to Lee's western, voting "King Kong" the best film of the year and giving actor, director and screenplay awards to "Capote". Joan Allen scored best actress for "The Upside of Anger", Jeffrey Wright and Rachel Weisz won supporting, and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" won best original screenplay.
After numerous snubs, the Washington Area Film Critics were the first to announce "Munich" as best film. Their acting wins all paralleled that of the Southeastern Film Critics (Hoffman, Huffman, Giamatti, Adams) and gave screenplay nods to "Capote" and "Crash".
Finally Roger Ebert has published his Top Ten of 2005 list citing Crash, Syriana, Munich, Junebug, Brokeback Mountain, Me and You and Everyone We Know, Nine Lives, King Kong, Yes and Millions.
