The first batch of critical awards for the season have been handed out with some predictable wins so far:
The Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. have voted Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" both best picture and best director for 2005. The other multiple award winner was "Capote" which took best actor for Philip Seymour Hoffman and a tie for best screenplay with "The Squid and the Whale". Catherine Keener and William Hurt took supporting nods, and Vera Farmiga landed best actress.
Similar results were yielded from the Boston Society of Film Critics who voted "Brokeback" best picture and director for 2005, "Capote" scored best screenplay and sctor for Hoffman, Reese Witherspoon for best actress in "Walk the Line", and Catherine Keener and Paul Giamatti scoring supporting nods.
The New York Film Critics Online voted "The Squid and the Whale" as best picture, Hoffman as best actor for "Capote", Fernando Meirelles for best director for "The Constant Gardener", Keira Knightley as best actress for "Pride & Prejudice", Oliver Platt and Amy Adams for supporting performances in "Casanova" and "Junebug" respectively.
The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures named Good Night, and Good Luck the 2005 Best Film of the Year. Philip Seymour Hoffman won best actor for "Capote" and Felicity Huffman took best actress for "Transamerica". Ang Lee took best director for "Brokeback Mountain", whilst Jake Gyllenhaal and Gong Li took supporting nods.
Finally, the American Film Institute has released their Top Ten List for the year: Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Crash, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Good Night and Good Luck, A History of Violence, King Kong, Munich, The Squid and the Whale, Syriana.
