New Line Cinema has hired "The Conjuring" scribes Chad and Carey Hayes to pen a third and fourth film in its 3D "Journey" franchise.
Starting in 2008 with "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D," the film scored a sequel in 2012 with "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" which saw Dwayne Johnson take over for Brendan Fraser as the adult male lead. Johnson is expected to return for both the new sequels.
The Hayes became known for penning numerous films for Dark Castle including "House of Wax," "The Reaping" and "Whiteout" before hitting it big with "The Conjuring". They're returning to pen that film's upcoming sequel, and also wrote Johnson's in production earthquake disaster thriller "San Andreas".
The Hayes will take over for previously attached screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and are expected to "take the project in a different direction than what had been in development before."
No word if the young male lead star of both previous films, "The Hunger Games" series regular Josh Hutcherson, will return for the new film. Both the previous films proved profitable endeavours - the $60 million budget first nabbed $240 million worldwide, the $79 million budget second took $335 million.
